Your final option on Burntside Lake is Camp DuNord, the national YMCA camp. This is a spectacular facility on the western shore of the North Arm. It is ideally set up for groups and families, but can also serve couples in quaint little cabins (see below left). This is NOT the spartan kids camp you knew back home. A large group might reserve one of these big chalets, new in 2008 and shown in the center. A large family or small group could select one of the regular cabins, below right. They're all pretty plush for wilderness accomodations, as shown below center. And they're all on or close to the water.

The camp has three villages. The oldest is DuNord, with 14 cabins. Northland is the most priimitive, with sleeping cabins and a central dining hall and central showerhouse. Pine Pointe has eight cabins, all built since 2000 with modern kitchens and bathrooms. This is the only resort on the lake open year round, with cross country skiing, dogsledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing and other winter activities.

In keeping with its YMCA mission, DuNord offers a wide range of supervised activities. They usually schedule age specific programs in the mornings, family activities in the afternoons, and such things as cookouts, campfires, storytelling, skits and musical jam sessions (in which various campers bring their own instruments) in the evenings. Kids can be enrolled in canoeing, kayaking, sailing, swimming, fishing, snorkelling, hiking, camping, nature studies, arts, crafts and wilderness skills. Special instruction for groups can be arranged with advance notice. DuNord's location is close to several campsites along Burntside Lake, and to portaging trails into Slim and Crab Lakes. North Arm runs north-south, so is less susceptible to the east-west axis of the wind, and avoids the wave action of the main lake. You could portage directly from DuNord back into Slim Lake, for a one day paddling and fishing trip. If your primary goal in coming to the Boundary Waters is to get back into the wilderness lakes, this might be ideal. 2125 East Hennepin Suite 150, Minneapolis, Mn. 55413. www.DuNord.org. 651-645-66.
